H1N1 Resource Page

Here at Renton Technical College we are keenly aware that while attending or working at school, you are in contact with a large group of people on a regular basis.  This can increase your chances of contracting or spreading the H1N1 virus.  We've collected a number of resources to help you find the information you need to make good choices about how best to protect yourself and others, and what to do in the event you become ill.

Workshops and associated materials continue to be made available to students, faculty and staff.   Those resources can be accessed directly on this page.  The main themes include Prevention, Planning and Response.  Some of the key takeaways include:

PREVENTION & PLANNING

hand washing

Thorough Hand Washing

Get in the habit of spending 20-30 seconds in vigorous movement each time you wash your hands.   This should include between fingers and across the plane of your wrists.  Hand sanitizers with at least 40% alcohol are a useful substitute if you cannot wash with soap and water.  For more information on hand hygiene, see the Centers for Disease Control website. http://www.cdc.gov/cleanhands/

Maintain Peak HealthHealthy Eating

It's important to keep your immune system strong through proper nutrition, exercise and getting enough sleep!   Those with compromised immune systems are at a higher risk for contracting the H1N1 virus.

Feeling Sick

Protect Others

When coughing or sneezing, always do so into a tissue and dispose of it afterwards.  Stay home if you get sick or are feeling ill.  Because H1N1 is so contagious, we ask that you err on the side of caution when the first sign of illness occurs.

RESPONSE

Special Note to Students Regarding Attendance

At RTC, grades and Financial Aid are both dependent on attendance measures.   Due to the highly contagious nature of the H1N1 virus, special accommodations can be made to allow you to complete work missed due to illness.

You will need to keep your instructor informed of your status.  For a directory of phone numbers and e-mail addresses, please refer to the Employee Directory.  In the event of missed assignments  due to the flu this season, you may receive an "Incomplete" on your grade sheet, provided that you have arranged for work completion via a written contract with your instructor, which will list the work to be completed and deadline for completion.  For more information, please speak with your instructor.

COLLEGE OPERATING SCHEDULE

In keeping with Washington State's Community and Technical College System, Renton Technical College has plans in place to address gaps in service due to faculty or staff illness.  It is our intent to remain open, but we will continue to post any changes in schedule or school closures via the Operating Schedule link at the bottom of the RTC home page.  If no messages are posted there, the college is open and on normal schedule.
