Get Started in 4 Easy Steps

Welcome to Renton Technical College. The following 4 easy steps will assist you in successfully enrolling into your program or class. For additional information, please see the Frequently Asked Questions Guide.


1. Apply – For Admissions & Financial Aid

A $30.00 non-refundable admissions application fee applies.

  • Complete your FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) online at fafsa.gov and visit the Financial Aid homepage for more information.
  • Access your new student email at RTC.edu/email.

2. Assess – Your Skills

A $20.00 non-refundable testing fee applies – pay at the Cashier's Office located in the Roberts Campus Center, Building I prior to taking the test. Refer to the COMPASS testing calendar for dates and times the test is being offered.

  • All new students (with the exception of Adult Basic Education and English as a Second Language students) must take the Math portion of the COMPASS placement test.
  • Non-degree seeking students who plan to enroll in Math must also take the COMPASS test.
  • Students registering in continuing education classes are not required to take the COMPASS assessment test.

Exception: If you have attended other colleges and have completed college level English Writing or Math (intermediate algebra and higher) with at least a 2.0 grade point average, please bring your transcript to the Counseling & Advising Center in Roberts Campus Center, Building I, and the COMPASS assessment may be waived. Copies of your transcript are acceptable.


3. Connect – With a Counselor/Advisor

Students interested in pursuing professional/technical and direct transfer programs MUST meet with a Counselor/Advisor prior to registration.

  • Review your COMPASS assessment test score with a Counselor/Advisor, explore career pathways, and select a program of study. Call (425) 235-5840 to schedule an appointment or visit the Student Services Department in the Roberts Campus Center, Building I.

If the program in which you wish to enroll has no openings, you may enroll on a pre-registration list, providing you have met all pre-requisites for the program. You will be placed on the list as of the date your admissions fee is paid. As openings occur, you will be notified by mail, email or by phone. No response will result in cancellation from the list.


4. Register – For Classes, Pay Tuition & Buy Books

  • Tuition and fees are due at the time you register for classes. You may pay by cash, check, VISA/MasterCard, Financial Aid Award, and STEPP (Student Tuition Easy Payment Plan). Payments are accepted at the Cashier's Office located in the Roberts Campus Center, Building I.
  • You can purchase books by going to the RTC Bookstore located in the Roberts Campus Center, Building I. Visit the RTC Bookstore website for more information.
