The Apprenticeship
Officer in Charge of a Navigation Watch & Unlimited Inland mate.
- Type of work: Apprentices are working towards an officer-level maritime license. During their training they will experience all facets of work onboard from entry level deckhand work (physical cleaning and maintenance of the vessel) to officer-level tasks such as watchstanding and basic vessel navigation.
- Admission period:
- Typically 2-3 start dates per year depending on license pathway within the program. Prospective students can view upcoming opportunities on MITAGS website.
Application Process
Applicants must meet the following:
- U.S. Citizenship (permanent residency)
- High school graduate or equivalency
- Completion of prerequisite math exam
- Eligible to obtain a Transportation Worker’s Identification Card (TWIC)
- Eligible to obtain United State Coast Guard (USCG) – Issued documents (Merchant Mariner Credential & Medical Certificate)
- Submission of resume, letter of interest, professional references and math exam completion (same or different)
- Participate in an interview-based admissions process with both MITAGS and partner companies who provide onboard training.
Employment
Applicants do not need to be currently employed in the industry. MITAGS assists with company placement as part of the admissions process for students to be eligible to complete their onboard training. Many students will stay on with their placement company following program completion and licensing.
