It doesn’t take long to understand that Marina Sadovnikova is energized by a good challenge – even the mountainous ones – having ascended to the top of Mt. Baker not once, but twice in the past few years. In addition to her alpine adventures, she took on the challenge of learning English and a new culture when she immigrated to the United States with her husband and two daughters and now speaks three languages that include her native Russian and Finnish.

Having worked in corporate sales in Finland, her family’s move to Washington state was an opportunity for a career reset that would require going back to college.

“I was looking for a profession where I could help others in meaningful ways, stay intellectually stimulated, and be relatively future proof against the rapid growth of AI,” she shared. “After researching community colleges near my home, I discovered RTC’s Massage Therapy program. It perfectly matched all my criteria, and it was the only local community college offering this program.”

She added, “Massage therapy is a good balance between working with my hands and working with my head.”

Going back to college in a new country not only takes courage but adds costs to a family budget. That is where your generosity played a role in supporting Marina’s quest to be a Massage Therapist. A recipient of the RTC Foundation Scholarship, that financial support has made it possible for Marina to purchase her therapy equipment and valuable classroom necessities.

“I didn’t expect to receive anything when I applied and wasn’t aware this was an option, so I was very honored and grateful to receive the support,” Marina shared.

Marina is now focused on therapeutic and medical message. She is passionate about working with clients who experience chronic pain, injuries, stress, and emotional challenges. “I hope to specialize in medical settings and work with specific groups such as athletes, pregnant women, and people recovering from injuries,” she shared.

She added that balancing school, family, and staying active in her daughters’ lives is not always easy but she has taken advantage of RTC’s flexible learning options.

“RTC has been incredibly supportive and welcoming. Our class feels like a second family and many of us come from different backgrounds. This environment has greatly boosted my confidence. RTC has helped me make the fresh start I was seeking.”
