RTC Accounting Students Assist Local Residents With Income Tax Preparation

Accounting students at Renton Technical College used their time this year between February and April to assist residents in the area with completion of required annual filings as part of the Internal Revenue Service’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Grant Program. “The IRS provides us with training, reference materials and tax preparation software. In exchange we provide income tax preparation and assistance for qualifying taxpayers. This is a win-win for all the participants.

RTC's Joe Spieldenner was elected Vice President, Division IV by the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society on April 18. Spieldenner joins a team of four other new officers including Yanik Etan, International President, College of Central Florida, Amie Bernstein, Vice President, Division I, Suffolk County Community College, New York, Elizabeth Taylor, Vice President, Division II, Grayson College, Texas and Hayley Younce, Vice President, Division III, Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Michigan.

OLYMPIA, Wash. — The directors of Washington State’s Centers of Excellence were awarded the Idahlynn Karre Exemplary Leadership award at the Chair Academy’s April International Leadership Conference. The award is given to postsecondary education leaders or leadership teams that have enhanced educational opportunities on their campuses.

Several local restaurants and college culinary programs gathered at RTC's Cafeteria Monday evening to offer diners exquisite culinary preparations served with beer and wine. The annual event celebrated the hard work done by apprentice cooks from around the Seattle metro area and culminated with an awards ceremony in which three honors were handed out.

Washington's Top Automotive High School Students Compete for Scholarships and Chance to Attend National Finals

Ten high school automotive technical teams from across the state of Washington competed in a fast paced test of their ability to find and fix "bugs" in RTC's Automotive Quad today. The students worked in pairs representing ten local schools including New Market Skills Center, North Thurston High School, Tri-Tech Skills Center, Clark County Skills Center, Sno Isle Technology Skills Center, Marysville Pilchuck High School, Kentridge High School, Puyallup High School, Bellevue High School and Decatur High School.

Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills State Competition Creates Opportunities for High School Automotive Technicians

BELLEVUE, Wa. – Top high school automotive technicians will challenge their technical skills and stretch their innovative minds at the Washington State Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills competition on Tuesday, April 28. Twenty high school students from across Washington will compete for thousands of dollars worth of scholarships and a chance to advance to the National Finals. The state competition will be held at Renton Technical College, 3000 NE Fourth Ave., Automotive Quad (Building K), from 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 28. Awards ceremony directly following.

Two Renton Technical College students were recently honored by Gov. Jay Inslee during a special ceremony held in Olympia. The two received academic medals from RTC President Steve Hanson during the daytime ceremony.

RENTON, Wash. – Renton Technical College (RTC) is now offering its first Bachelor of Applied Science (BAS) degree in Application Development.

The BAS in Application Development program is designed for students who have earned an information technology related associate’s degree and are looking to take the next step toward earning a bachelor’s degree. Graduates from this degree program will have a deep technical foundation in advanced computer science topics, such as: software development, enterprise application, database design, web development and systems analysis. Classes are offered in the evenings to accommodate the needs of working adults, and are delivered in a flexible, hybrid format incorporating online, classroom and lab components.
