Firestop: Workers in this trade specialize in installing firestop systems to prevent the spread of fire, smoke, and toxic gases through openings and joints in fire-resistance-rated walls, floors, and ceilings. This work involves sealing penetrations for pipes, cables, and ducts, as well as treating joints, curtain walls, and perimeter barriers. Firestop technicians use various materials, including sealants, intumescent wraps, collars, and blocks, to maintain the building’s compartmentalization and ensure compliance with fire safety regulations. The trade requires attention to detail, knowledge of firestop systems, and adherence to safety and building codes. The work area for the firestop apprenticeship is all of Washington state.
