The Work
Workers install new roofs and repair and remove old roofs using a variety of materials.
They cover roofs with wood shingles, composition, shingles, asphalt and gravel, slate,
tiles and single-ply materials. The work is conducted on both commercial and residential
buildings.
Working Conditions
Roofers usually work outside on top of structures, but sometimes work inside or below
ground level. The work is physically demanding and requires heavy lifting, climbing,
bending and squatting, with a significant risk of injury from falls. The work is performed
in all weather conditions. It is often very hot. There may be periods of unemployment
between jobs, with jobs lasting only nine to ten months a year.
