FERPA

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act is a Federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. Privacy rights transfer to the student when they reach the age of 18 or attend a school beyond the high school level.

RTC is a college and has to uphold FERPA even if the student is participating in our high school completion program.

STUDENT EMAIL

Students will need this for almost all RTC systems. Students will be prompted to create a unique password at their first login.

RELEASE OF INFORMATION (ROI)

A student may request/initiate a “release of information” which allows us to share details about their enrollment. This does NOT transfer decision-making authority to those named in the ROI.

WHERE ARE ASSIGNMENTS, HOMEWORK, CLASSES?

Visit the RTC CANVAS site:

  1. Login: Student Email
  2. Password: Student-created

WHERE ARE CREDITS EARNED/CREDITS NEEDED?

Visit the SKYWARD website:

  • Login and password is customized when a student activates their account
  • The activation is sent to the EMAIL they used in their enrollment forms

COMMON MISCOMMUNICATIONS AND FIXES

  1. Teachers will not respond to emails from parents or advocates because they cannot share information due to FERPA and won’t know if there is a release of information on file. Please direct questions to YouthHS@rtc.edu instead.
  2. High school records are not housed with the main college. Please visit the Youth High School Transcripts and Diploma page to request high school records.
  3. Students only need to do our enrollment form ONCE. This includes YouthSource, Running Start, Adult Education, etc. If you took any classes with RTC, you are in our system and do not need to re-do the enrollment form. If you’ve been gone for some time and want to re-register, just send us an email or call/text 425-243-2366.
