Why have you and your family created the Thresa Jane Smart-Benjamin Scholarship for Women?

“As a life-long supporter of education, I have seen first-hand how important the education of women is and how it helps their families and improves their lives. My mother, Thresa, was a huge influence in the lives of women around her and so in honor of her and her leading example of the power of education, my family has established this scholarship for women who have taken two quarters of Basic Studies advanced level coursework.”

~ Michele Lesmeister, RTC Faculty member for Reading Apprenticeship, Basic Skills for Adults and Transition to College

Because of the generosity of Michele and her family members, nine women will receive a $1,000 scholarship during the 2017-18 academic year to support their transition from Basic Studies to career training – a vital step toward greater independence and family-wage jobs.
