Some of the more frequently asked questions are listed below. Should you have a question for which you cannot find an answer on our web page, please e-mail us at studentfinancials@rtc.edu.

The 1098-T Tuition Statement form is used for informational purposes to help students and parents determine if they are eligible for an education tax credit. The form shows the amount of tuition and fees paid directly to the college during the calendar year. Please refer to the IRS Publication 970 or IRS Publication 5197 for more information on education tax credits.

Note: A Form 1098-T will report any qualifying payments made out of pocket, over and above any grants, scholarships, or other funding received. If there were no qualifying payments, the college would not generate a 1098T since there is nothing that would qualify for the tuition credit.

The student will not receive a 1098-T for the 2023 tax year if their Grants/Scholarships or Third-party payments, including disbursements, exceed self-paid tuition.

1098-T forms will be available by January 31.

You now have the opportunity to receive this electronically. If you would like to receive your form electronically, the student must give/grant consent. Please follow up with the tutorial on how to grant consent for 1098T.  If you do not consent, the 1098-T form will be mailed to the address on file.

A form will be generated and sent to the student if:

  • International students
  • Students enrolled in non-credit courses
  • Students whose tuition and fees were fully paid for on their behalf through financial aid (grants, scholarships, loans, etc.) or through a third party such as their employer or a government agency (Dept. of Veteran Affairs, Labor and Industries, etc.)

Students can choose to receive their 1098-T form electronically by consenting online through their ctcLink student portal (Student Homepage) in the Financial Account tile. Within the Financial Account tile, select the 1098-T menu option and click View 1098-T. You must click the Grant Consent button, mark the checkbox to provide your consent, and then click Submit. You will then have the option to view the form or download it (if you are eligible for a 1098-T.)

If you have not consented to receive your form electronically, it will be mailed to the address the college has on file for you (the address in your ctcLink student portal) if you can receive one.

  • Log into ctcLink
  • Select the My Information option.
  • Select the Addresses option.
  • Enter the address information and click the Save button.

You may be able to take either the tuition and fees deduction or claim an education credit on Form 1040 or 1040A for the qualified tuition and related expenses that were actually paid during the calendar year.

The 1098-T form is based on a calendar year (January 1 – December 31.) If you received Financial Aid in the form of grants, scholarships or paid by a third party and it was equal to or greater than your qualified tuition and fees in a calendar year, you will not receive a 1098-T form.

Unfortunately, we cannot provide you with tax advice, so we suggest that you contact your accountant or tax advisor if you have specific questions related to your tax requirements and responsibilities. However, we can inform you that you are not required to attach IRS Form 1098‐T to your tax return, but it would be wise to keep it for your records.

Yes, if the 1098-T form was generated and issued to you for the year requested. Please use the ctcLink account to select the appropriate tax year for your request. Renton Technical College is required to report payment amounts that apply only to qualified tuition and related expenses. This may be less than the total of payments made to the College if part of those payments also paid charges other than qualified tuition and related expenses. Also, be aware that the amounts posted on the form are reported in a calendar year format and not an academic year.

Yes, to comply with Internal Revenue Service Treasury Regulation 1.6050S-1(e)(4) and Section 6109 of the Internal Revenue Code, the College must request your Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) in order to furnish you and the Internal Revenue Service with an annual statement (IRS form 1098-T) of Tuition and fees that may qualify for the American Opportunity tax credit or Lifetime Learning tax credit.

If you do not submit your SSN or ITIN, you will not be denied access to the college; however, your 1098-T will be incorrect. You or your tax advisor should check Internal Revenue Code Sections 6109 and 6723 for more information on whether you may be subject to civil penalties for failing to provide a correct SSN or ITIN. Pursuant to state law (RCW 28B.10.042) and federal law (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act), the college will protect your SSN/ITIN from unauthorized use and/or disclosure.

The IRS can impose penalties per information return for missing or incorrect SSN/ITINs to you as a student. If not provided, or your number does not appear to be accurate, we will contact you and request that you submit your number. If you do not provide the requested information, YOU MAY BE LIABLE to the IRS for the penalty.

You can use the Interactive Tax Assistant tool on the IRS website to see if you can claim a credit on your taxes. For additional assistance, please consult with your tax advisor or contact the IRS. The college cannot determine your eligibility for credit nor help with the calculation of the credit amount.

If you have questions about the availability of your 1098-T, please contact the Student Financials at 425-235-6390 or email studentfinancials@rtc.edu.
