To join Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), students need to meet the following criteria:

  • Enrollment: Be enrolled at Renton Technical College
  • Coursework: Completed at least 12 hours of coursework that can be applied toward an associate degree, bachelor’s degree or 6 hours toward a one-year certificate.
  • GPA: Have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
  • Invitation: Membership is by invitation only, so you must receive an invitation from RTC’s local PTK chapter.
  • Once invited, students will need to pay a one-time membership fee of $60, which covers both international and local chapter dues. 

To become a Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) student officer, you need to meet the following requirements:

  • You must be an active member of PTK in good standing, which means maintaining a minimum GPA (3.5 or higher) and fulfilling any chapter-specific requirements.
  • Complete the Chapter Officer application. That includes writing a one-page personal leadership philosophy and presenting it at a PTK Executive meeting.
  • Be prepared to commit to the role for the entire academic year. This includes attending regular meetings, participating in chapter activities, and fulfilling the specific duties of your officer position.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to leadership and service. Previous volunteer or leadership experience, and a clear motivation for seeking the officer role.
  • Officers are elected by the chapter members during a general meeting.
  • Each officer position has specific duties, such as organizing events, managing finances, or coordinating communication.

What is Phi Theta Kappa (PTK)?

  • PTK is the official honor society for two-year colleges, recognized for celebrating academic achievement and fostering personal growth, leadership, and service among community and technical college students.

  • To join, you need an invitation from Renton Technical College PTK chapter.

  • PTK offers the Golden Opportunity Scholarship to help cover the membership fee for eligible students. 

Do I have to participate in PTK activities?

  • Participation is not mandatory, but it's highly encouraged to make the most of your membership. Engaging in activities can enhance your leadership skills and provide valuable experiences.

What GPA do I need to maintain my membership?

  • Generally, you need to maintain a "B+" average (3.5 GPA)

Are international students eligible for PTK?

  • Yes, international students can join PTK and are even eligible for specific scholarships like the Coca-Cola Global Leaders of Promise Scholarship.
