October is Washington State Disability Awareness Month and the college is celebrating its diverse community with a month of programming around the intersectionality of disability experiences. Events include lectures, workshops, exhibits, and more.

On October 11, RTC invited motivational speaker and professional athlete Steve Ferreira to present a “Living A Disabled Life,” his presentation on what it is like to live with a disability.

Sara Sanders Gardner, designer and Director of Bellevue College's Neurodiversity Navigators program, will administer a workshop titled “Neurodiversity Cultural Responsiveness: Supporting Autistic and Neurodivergent Students at College” which covers common impacts of neurodivergent disabilities. Sanders Gardner’s workshop runs on October 19 from 2:30 – 4 p.m. in Blencoe Auditorium (C-101).

Finally, on October 23, RTC will show Crip Camp (2020). Crip Camp tells the story of a historic disability rights movement. Down the road from Woodstock, a revolution blossomed at a ramshackle summer camp for teenagers with disabilities, transforming their lives and igniting a landmark movement. A group discussion will follow the movie. The movie starts at 6 p.m. in Blencoe Auditorium.

RTC students, faculty and staff, and members of the community alike are invited to celebrate Disability Awareness Month with us on campus. For more, visit our Disability Resource Services page.
