RTC uses industry-recognized certifications and training to verify your knowledge and award you Academic Credit for Prior Learning. We also award ACPL for Course Challenge exams, where you can show your knowledge and skills via assessment.

Veteran students submitting Joint Service Transcripts (JST’s) should refer to the Veteran Student section below.

If you have completed an exam like AP or CLEP, please refer to the Credit by Exam section below.

How do I get started?

Step 1: Discuss ACPL opportunities with your instructor at the start of your first quarter.

Step 2: Contact Cashiering and pay Course Challenge Fee of $75 per course.

(Instructor or Program Dean will need to contact Cashiering first to have the fee added to your student account in Ctclink.)

Step 3: Work with your instructor to complete a Course Challenge Application.

  • Option A: If you have an industry certificate, license, or occupational cross-walk, submit your documentation to your instructor or Program Dean.
  • Option B: If you take a Course Challenge Exam, your instructor will proctor the exam.

Step 4: Your instructor will send all documentation listed below to acpl@rtc.edu for processing.

  • Receipt of payment
  • Completed and signed Course Challenge application.
  • Industry certificates and documentation OR Course Challenge exam showing passing score.

Step 5: The Credentials office will email you once you have been awarded ACPL.

We welcome Veteran students to Renton Technical College! RTC can articulate military credits that are equivalent to an RTC course. When a direct course equivalent does not exist, elective credit will be awarded when possible. Veteran students must submit official Joint Service transcripts and official transcripts from all previously attended colleges or universities.

Request your JST

For service members and veterans of the U.S. Army, NAVY, Marine Corps, and U.S. Coast Guard RTC will need an official Joint Services Transcript (JST).

  • For service members and veterans of the U.S. Air Force, RTC will need an official transcript from Air University (formerly the Community College of the Air Force)
  • For service members who left the military before 1976, the College can evaluate military credit from a notarized DD 214 form

Credit for Non-Traditional Learning

Students with military training can also pursue credit attainment through other methods of approved prior learning assessment (credit by exam, portfolio, etc.). Please contact your instructor or program Dean for guidance and further information.
